A 22-Year-Old’s Victory Over Ewing’s Sarcoma: Determination and Hope
From Athletic Dreams to Unexpected Diagnosis
Haten, a vibrant young adult of 22, was passionate about basketball and other sports. He had recently begun his professional journey with excitement for what lay ahead. His world shifted dramatically in June 2023 when he received a diagnosis that would test his resolve: Ewing’s sarcoma, an aggressive malignant tumor affecting the bones.

A Minor Complaint Becomes a Major Concern
The journey began much earlier, in July 2022, when Haten first noticed discomfort in the area near his left shoulder blade. Initially, he dismissed it as insignificant, believing it was merely a common muscle strain. However, as the months progressed, his condition worsened dramatically. He began experiencing recurrent fevers and general illness, and the shoulder blade pain intensified following physical exertion. Most alarmingly, a visible mass appeared and continued to enlarge in the affected area.
When Haten finally sought medical evaluation at a local hospital with his family in June 2023, imaging studies and tissue sampling revealed the grim truth: Ewing’s sarcoma, a highly aggressive bone malignancy. The tumor measured approximately 3 centimeters at the time of diagnosis. The news struck the entire family with profound shock, as the possibility of such a serious disease had never crossed their minds.

Parents Take Swift Action
Although devastated by the diagnosis, Haten’s parents quickly regained their composure and became determined advocates for their son’s recovery. Their immediate priority was to locate the most advanced and effective treatment available. With this objective in mind, they distributed his pathology report through multiple channels and consulted with leading oncologists in Turkey and South Korea. After careful consideration of all options, they ultimately selected St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou as the facility to provide his treatment.
Reflecting on the initial contact, Haten observed: “The hospital staff demonstrated exceptional professionalism and genuine care. They responded promptly to all our inquiries and went above and beyond to support us throughout the consultation process.”
Treatment Begins in a Foreign Land
Haten arrived at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou in July 2023. Although he harbored concerns about adapting to an unfamiliar climate, foreign cuisine, and language barriers, these worries quickly dissipated. The hospital staff proved exceptionally attentive and thoughtful, with dedicated interpreters and support personnel available to address any challenges. The MDT (multidisciplinary team) of specialists conducted a thorough initial evaluation and promptly formulated a personalized treatment strategy, which provided immense reassurance to Haten and his family.
Haten shared his reflections: “The medical team’s competence and dedication gave us confidence. What impressed me most was how quickly they developed a clear treatment plan tailored specifically to my condition.”
Understanding Ewing’s Sarcoma and the Treatment Plan
Dr. Hu, Haten’s primary physician, provided crucial insight into his condition. Ewing’s sarcoma represents a highly aggressive malignancy that predominantly affects children and adolescents, though it can occur in young adults. The tumor typically originates in long bones such as the pelvis, femur, tibia, humerus, and ribs, though it frequently extends into adjacent soft tissues. The disease is characterized by rapid progression and significant metastatic potential.
In Haten’s case, the tumor had already demonstrated alarming growth patterns. Between his initial diagnosis in June and his arrival at the hospital in July, the lesion had expanded from 3 centimeters to 5 centimeters. Fortunately, imaging studies revealed no evidence of distant spread to other organs.

Based on Haten’s clinical presentation and treatment preferences, the medical team recommended a combined approach: minimally invasive interventional therapy followed by radical surgical resection. This strategy would target the tumor through two complementary mechanisms while minimizing systemic toxicity.
Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy: Starving the Tumor
The interventional therapy component of Haten’s treatment operates on a sophisticated principle. Using advanced imaging guidance, specially trained interventional radiologists insert precision catheters through the arterial system directly to the tumor’s blood supply. Once positioned, they deliver embolic agents—special substances that block blood flow—and chemotherapy drugs simultaneously to the lesion. This dual approach achieves two critical objectives: it cuts off the tumor’s nutritional blood supply while delivering high concentrations of anticancer medication directly to the affected tissue. Compared to traditional systemic chemotherapy, this technique dramatically reduces toxic side effects while maximizing therapeutic benefit.
Haten’s experience with the interventional procedures was remarkably positive. He reported: “The doctors explained everything beforehand, which eliminated my anxiety. During the procedures, I experienced minimal discomfort, and surprisingly, the side effects were negligible. Although the first intervention caused some localized pain, subsequent treatments were far more comfortable. Most importantly, I could visually confirm that the tumor was shrinking significantly, which lifted my spirits tremendously.”
After completing four interventional therapy sessions, Haten’s tumor had regressed dramatically—from 5 centimeters down to just 2 centimeters, representing a reduction of more than 60 percent of its original volume.

Surgical Resection and Complete Remission
On October 28, 2023, Haten underwent surgical removal of the residual Ewing’s sarcoma from his left scapula along with affected cervical lymph nodes. Pathological examination of the excised tissue revealed complete absence of any malignant cells—the tumor had been entirely eradicated, and no residual disease remained in the lymph nodes. The assessment indicated complete remission, marking a decisive victory against his disease.

A Message of Hope for Fellow Patients
Dr. Hu commended Haten’s courage and psychological resilience throughout his treatment journey. She remarked: “Haten has demonstrated remarkable emotional stability and mental fortitude during his entire therapeutic course. His swift recovery is a testament to his spirit. We remain fully committed to supporting his continued health and success. His future holds boundless possibilities, and we wish him a life of wellness and fulfillment.”
Haten chose to share an inspiring message with others facing similar diagnoses: “Trust in your medical team’s expertise and judgment. Our responsibility as patients is to cultivate the right mindset and refuse to surrender to despair. Maintain unwavering belief that effective treatment exists. Preserve a positive outlook and consciously reject negative thoughts about your illness. Embrace optimism and hold faith that good fortune will ultimately prevail.”
