The Moment Everything Changed: Warning Signs and Diagnosis

My name is Dang Thi Len. At 55 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, I faced what seemed like the end of my world when I received a cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis in 2018. The path that led to this moment began with seemingly innocuous symptoms that gradually escalated into something far more serious.

Approximately one month prior to my official diagnosis, my body began sending distress signals that I could not ignore. The initial warning appeared as a yellowing of my skin, which alarmed both me and my family. Soon after, my appetite began to diminish steadily, and I experienced progressive weight loss accompanied by increasing fatigue. These compounding symptoms filled me with anxiety and uncertainty about what was happening to my health.

In Vietnam, I underwent comprehensive medical examinations and endoscopic procedures. During one procedure, physicians inserted a drainage catheter to assist with bile expulsion from my body. However, the conversation that followed the operation proved devastating. The doctor’s assessment was bleak: the likelihood of effectively controlling my cancer was virtually impossible, with the most optimistic projection hovering below 1%. Hearing those words shattered any hope I had been clinging to, and my entire family sank into despair.

Love and Determination: The Catalyst for Hope

Despite the grim prognosis delivered by physicians in Vietnam, my family refused to surrender to hopelessness. They embarked on an exhaustive search, reaching out to contacts and exploring every possible avenue for me to obtain meaningful medical intervention. Their persistent efforts and unwavering determination eventually led us to St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, which came highly recommended through an associate we trusted.

Learning about the hospital’s cutting-edge treatment approaches and the remarkable success stories of other patients who had undergone care there provided an unexpected spark of optimism. I began to sense the possibility of reclaiming my life and health.

My family promptly arranged a consultation at the Ho Chi Minh International Service Center affiliated with the hospital. The professionalism and warmth of the staff impressed us immediately. They patiently addressed every question we posed and facilitated a consultation with Professor Peng Xiaochi from the hospital itself. Professor Peng explained that the facility had developed an advanced, integrated minimally invasive treatment approach that surpassed conventional therapeutic methods in both scientific rigor and efficacy. His explanation rekindled confidence and hope within my family regarding my recovery prospects.

Bolstered by my family’s steadfast support and encouragement, I made the courageous decision to embark on this treatment journey. In that pivotal moment, I recognized that their love and backing constituted not merely emotional motivation but the most formidable force I possessed in confronting my disease.

The Treatment Path: Science Meets Healing

Upon arriving at the hospital, my treatment experience proceeded seamlessly from the outset. Following admission, the medical team performed thorough diagnostic imaging and evaluations, after which they formulated a customized treatment protocol tailored specifically to my condition and physical status. The comprehensive plan encompassed three key therapeutic components: interventional therapy, radioactive seed implantation, and photodynamic therapy.

One particularly significant aspect of my treatment involved the implantation of radioactive particles—specifically thirty particles—directly into the tumor site. This advanced technique allows high concentrations of radiation to be delivered precisely where cancer cells are located, effectively targeting malignant tissue while preserving the integrity of healthy surrounding tissue. In addition to this breakthrough procedure, I completed six separate courses of interventional therapy, which concentrated potent medications directly at the tumor location, thereby enhancing both the precision and potency of the therapeutic intervention.

The results of these scientifically-grounded treatments exceeded what I had dared to hope for. By October 2018, my medical team informed me that the treatment had achieved remarkable success and that my cancer had achieved stability. As my physical condition began its recovery trajectory, my emotional and psychological state transformed as well. The anxiety and fear that had characterized my initial diagnosis gradually gave way to tranquility and genuine joy. I found myself able to participate in activities I had previously enjoyed without any physical limitations or discomfort. My eating habits returned to normal, my daily activities resumed their regular patterns, and I regained the ability to simply live and experience life as I once had.

Life After Cancer: Returning Home and Inspiring Others

Nearly six years have passed since my treatment at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, and I was recently invited to return to the facility as an accomplished survivor to participate in the organization’s Anti-Cancer Stars Homecoming Gala. Standing there, reflecting on my journey, I felt overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude.

Today, my health status mirrors that of someone who has never confronted cancer. If I chose not to disclose my medical history, virtually no one would suspect that I had ever battled this disease. I have fully reintegrated into my normal life, experiencing good health and genuine happiness.

The quality of care I received from physicians and nursing staff throughout my hospitalization was exceptional in every aspect. Beyond addressing my physical medical requirements, the entire team provided substantial emotional and psychological support. Patients receiving treatment shared their experiences, discussed their feelings, and provided encouragement to one another as we all fought together against our respective illnesses. Within that compassionate environment, I experienced an invisible yet powerful force that sustained my determination to persevere.

My husband’s consistent words—”Focus on your treatment and do your best; I will manage everything else”—helped me maintain an optimistic perspective and confront my challenges with courage. The unconditional love of my family, combined with the professional expertise and compassionate care I received, fundamentally transformed my life and my future.
