Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy Preserved My Breast for 8+ Years

How Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy Helped Me Keep My Breast for More Than 8 Years

In November 2023, St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou hosted a special gathering called the “Come-Home Gala of Anti-Cancer Stars,” part of the hospital’s Belt and Road Holistic Integrated Oncology Medical Training Base initiative. Nine cancer survivors from around the world were invited to the event to share their personal battles with cancer. Among the honored guests was Ms. Asia, a breast cancer survivor from Indonesia, who spoke to the audience with visible emotion, warmth, and pride about her recovery journey.

Choosing St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou From the Very Beginning

Ms. Asia’s health scare began in March 2015, when she noticed a lump in her left breast. A local medical evaluation delivered difficult news: she had invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast. The diagnosis left her shaken and heartbroken. Yet she quickly reminded herself that prolonged sorrow would only add to her family’s burden, so she chose to face the disease with resolve rather than despair. As it turned out, she wouldn’t have to search long before finding the right path forward.

She recalled that on the very night of her diagnosis, her brother-in-law reached out and suggested she look into St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. Acting on that advice, she brought her medical report to the hospital’s representative office in Medan, where, by coincidence, a visiting physician from the Guangzhou headquarters happened to be available for a consultation. That single meeting was enough to convince her to travel to the hospital’s main campus in Guangzhou, China, for treatment. With support from the local office staff, her journey there went smoothly. Looking back, she speaks with quiet pride about how confidently she made that decision from the outset.

A Minimally Invasive Path That Spared Her the Usual Side Effects

Ms. Asia arrived at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou in April 2015. After admission and a full diagnostic workup, doctors confirmed her cancer had progressed to Stage III. Taking into account her overall health and specific condition, the hospital’s multidisciplinary team (MDT) designed a tailored, minimally invasive treatment plan built around a combination of interventional therapy and naturopathy.

Before any procedure, the MDT physicians made it a priority to walk Ms. Asia through every step of the process, ensuring she fully understood what to expect. Following these discussions, the team scheduled a series of six interventional sessions. By the third session, the results were already clearly visible, with the tumor responding strongly to treatment. In July 2016, a whole-body PET/CT scan performed in Singapore delivered the news the family had been hoping for: the tumor had completely disappeared. Ms. Asia’s relatives were overjoyed, grateful that she had found an effective treatment approach from the very start. She later reflected that although her family had carried plenty of worries in the beginning, watching the tumor gradually shrink and eventually vanish brought them both relief and deep gratitude toward the hospital’s care team.

Comparing notes with friends who had undergone treatment elsewhere, Ms. Asia noted a stark contrast. While some of them struggled with debilitating side effects — weakness and persistent vomiting among them — she experienced none of that. Her appetite stayed strong, she slept well, physical activity remained easy for her, and her weight even climbed to 60 kilograms during that period. She often speaks about how differently minimally invasive treatment affected her compared to more conventional approaches. Since finishing her course of treatment in 2017, she has maintained good physical health, continuing her normal routines and even managing business travel and family vacations throughout her follow-up care.

The Real Key to Beating Cancer: Making Peace With Yourself

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Asia described cancer as a teacher that pushed her toward self-acceptance and a more positive outlook on life. She acknowledged that many patients, upon hearing a cancer diagnosis, feel overwhelmed by fear or even give up hope, viewing the disease as a death sentence. But she firmly rejects that mindset. In her view, a cancer diagnosis doesn’t mark the end of one’s story — patients still have real opportunities for effective treatment and for continuing to pursue the things that matter to them.

At the event, she offered words of encouragement to fellow patients still fighting the disease, urging them to stay hopeful and courageous. She emphasized that even while living with cancer, maintaining a positive spirit and the willingness to keep fighting make all the difference.

An Overview of the Minimally Invasive Techniques Involved

Interventional Therapy

Interventional therapy is performed using image-guided puncture techniques, in which specialized catheters and precision instruments deliver anti-tumor medication directly into the tumor site — at concentrations 2 to 8 times higher than what intravenous drug delivery can achieve. At the same time, the procedure blocks the blood vessels feeding the tumor, cutting off its blood supply to shrink or eliminate it.

  • Minimally invasive with reduced trauma, fewer complications, strong safety profile, and quicker recovery
  • A suitable option for patients who have not responded well to conventional radiotherapy, or who are unable or unwilling to undergo surgery
